A large 2 way Transmission Line using the superb 10" IPL/10/K Kevlar Bass unit with its high sensitivity, smooth response,  massive 7" magnet, and the light but very stiff  Kevlar/paper  cone, and the superb high sensitivity IPL compression driver mounted in  the bitumen damped 12" Waveguide. The latest research in high quality audio is confirming what many speaker developers had suspected i.e. that: the higher mid and treble frequencies require directionality in order to experience the nearest to recorded sound (i.e. scattering treble around the room as most dome tweeters do is not good enough, especially in smaller rooms where reflected sound of the walls and ceilings is more of a problem) . Many companies are now working on this type of speaker, however one of the main problems has been finding the best bass loading to combine with the amazingly open and clean mid-band and treble that the Waveguide produces, (some have been using Infinite Baffle designs with multiple Subwoofers, however this is extremely expensive costing thousands of pounds) . After 6 months of research we believe we have one of the best answers to this problem with the superbly controlled Transmission Line loaded IPL/10/K.

The bass unit crosses over to the Waveguide at 1.5k , much effort has been taken to produce a very flat anechoic frequency response at the  listening position - (graph a, tested with Bill Waslo`s Audiosuite) much attention has also been paid to getting the phase and slopes correct at the crossover point resulting in a seamless transition, (graph b, you will also note the deep null of the out of phase trace) To get the best response the waveguide required approx 15 deg off-axis mounting, hence the mounting position below the bass unit gave the best results. The great thing about the S5tl waveguide is that even when walking around the listening room the speakers can still sound natural , although obviously best results are obtained at the normal listening position. . The S5tl W is designed to operate best with the grille attached. It is also recommended that the room is carpeted or that there is a carpeted area in front of the speakers. The latest version of this speaker has a more extended bass and a 3rd order crossover on the treble removing any hint of hardness from the compression driver.

The resulting sound is clear, natural, effortless, and involving, and well worth the months of development, I PL carry out response checks on all the compression drivers and all are specifically matched to the bass units (I do not know of other kit manufacturers that go to this amount of trouble). This speaker is  high efficiency and nominally 8 ohms, the bass is superbly deep and controlled, meaning that it is suitable for use with any amplifier including low power valve amplifiers. The Shanling MC30 works very well with this speaker

. The bi-wired crossover incorporates quality  polypropylene capacitors, Super power Steel Laminate inductors, and high power resistors. The upper mid and treble level is adjustable, by altering a resistor in the crossover. The line is damped with Profiled Acoustic Foam, and Long Haired wool.
