Open Baffle Loudspeakers have rightly  enjoyed a huge resurgence of popularity in recent years with experts including Siegfried Linkwitz endorsing the concept . The advantages are the superbly open, detailed, and natural sound , the quality of the bass and the complete absence of nasty resonances associated with  larger ported cabinets.

The disadvantages are; a) the cancellations require a larger cone area to produce a given sound level b) the speakers require a distance of at least 3 foot from the rear wall although placement close to the side wall is not a problem. For best results speakers should be placed symmetrically within the room. c) an amplifier with capacity for driving a  4 ohm speaker is required (most do)

IPL Acoustics working with the help of Tony Seaford of Marton Music (who is a particular expert in this field, and has designed many successful Open baffle speakers) have designed a relatively compact unit using 2 superb IPL 8" Magnesium coned bass units with large magnets and cast chassis and 2 of the highly acclaimed 5" IPL/5/M magnesium coned units handling the frequencies from 400hz to 3.5khz and one of the best tweeters in its class the highly rated Fountek CD3.0 Ribbon tweeter.

The top cabinet has been isolated from the bass cabinet with 4 rubber tap washers meaning that the nasty MDF resonances occurring at about 600hz are not transferred to the bass cabinets, this results in a transparency which allows the speakers to perform with a complete absence of boxy colouration. Crossover kits contain superb quality Steel Laminate, ferrite, and air-cored inductors, IPL polypropylene capacitors (where required) and top quality high powered resistors, SB2 Gold terminals are included with the plus kit.
